Welcome to the 2014-2015 School Year!
I introduce myself as your Social Sciences teacher for 8th-11th grades, and Physics teacher for 10th-11th grades this year.
Physics is probably the most applicable of the three pure sciences (Biology, Physics, and Chemistry). The study of physics is not meant to answer fundamental questions about our existence in this wonderful universe. In physics, scientists make observations, develop theories, experiment and revise their theories. We will apply this knowledge at the school’s Science Laboratory, we will make virtual experiments, and interesting projects will be doneat home, when applicable.
Studying history provides important perspectives on the past and offers direction for the future.
It is commonly known that an understanding of the past is fundamental to an understanding of the present too.
The analysis of history provides an essential context for evaluating contemporary institutions, politics, and cultures.
History also provides unique insight into human nature and human civilization. There is another reason to study history: it is fun!
History combines the excitement of exploration and discovery with the sense of reward, born of
successfully confronting and making sense of complex and challenging problems.

Inside the classroom, we have assigned a section on the board where the students will find their daily homework,
and they can also find them in the “wikispace” of each teacher. Students have to turn in their homework,
classwork, and projects on time in order to be graded.

When your child is sick, make sure you send with him/her an excuse when he/she comes back to school, so he/she can keep up with the work and avoid losing the points. If the child is to leave school, a written authorization should be sent.

I look forward to work with your child and help him/her achieve academic success this year!

Sincerely,

Ms. Stephanie Custodio
Social Sciences/ Physics Teacher

Atentamente,

Ms. Stephanie Custodio
Maestra de Física / Ciencias Sociales en Inglés

Class Description and Objectives:

  • The Physics and Social Sciences courses are based on the National Education Standards, and the academic goals of our school.
  • Students will learn, apply and synthesize the tools of Physics and History in the context of: study cases, investigation works, field investigation, forums, and other important areas of their community.
  • In Physics, students will analyze systematically the solutions of Physics problems. They will understand that any problem solution involves: analysis of word problems, extraction of useful data, use of Physics formulas, use of mathematical processes, and a lot of reasoning.
  • In History, the student will be able to develop ideas, concepts and procedures as a motivation to start thinking strategically and globally. Students will understand the importance of feedback in the development of any activity involving history and academics too.
  • The student will be able to change any attitude to favorable and positive ones, in the school environment and other environments in which he/she is involved, improving his/her interpersonal relationships.
  • Students will be conscious that the knowledge acquired in class must be through a process: learn to think, learn to learn, and learn to work. These classes seek, among other things, high participation and support to and from all students. The students will work towards their own preparation to move on to more advanced science courses in school years to come.
